ATO Community

Project role: UX Design / Front-end development

A government-hosted community forum

The challenge

The ATO set out to create one of the first government-hosted community forums – a place where users could ask questions, share knowledge, and connect with others navigating tax and superannuation topics. The goal was to create a platform that felt approachable, intuitive, and aligned with government accessibility standards.

The solution

Our team led the project through research, design, and front-end development, focusing on user needs from the outset:

  • User-centred design: Through user research and iterative testing, we developed wireframes and prototypes for the Alpha product to ensure usability and engagement.
  • Custom interface development: Working within the Lithium platform, we extended its capabilities using HTML, Sass, JavaScript, FreeMarker templates, and Lithium Query Language (LiQL).
  • Tailored functionality: Over 20 custom plugins were developed to support the design vision and deliver a seamless, accessible experience for users.

ATO Community launched as one of the first of its kind and was recognised with a Good Design Award for Web Design and Development in 2018. It remains a strong example of how government digital products can combine innovation with usability.
