Helping businesses find government grants and programs

The challenge

Business.gov.au offers a grants finder tool to help users discover government support programs. However, user research revealed several usability concerns:

  • Users received too many irrelevant results.
  • Users didn’t understand how their form inputs influenced the results.
  • It was difficult to change selections and explore alternate results.

The solution

To address these issues, I worked closely with the team to reimagine the tool’s interface. The redesigned solution focuses on clarity, relevance, and user control:

  • Results-first visibility: Restructuring the layout so that search results appeared immediately, giving users real-time feedback on their selections
  • Integrated guided search: A hybrid model combines a series of guided questions with flexible filters, letting users adjust their selections at any point without losing progress.
  • Providing filtering options: A range of filters were introduced, leveraging existing meta-data to allow more precise result refinement.

The updated design empowers users to take control of their search journey, reducing frustration and improving confidence in the tool’s results.
